STEM Energy Monitoring System & Dashboard

Primary School

Project Details

Client: Primary School

Task: STEM Energy Monitoring System & Dashboard

The Background

Our Client (Primary School) wanted to explore the option of implementing an Energy Monitoring System to provide visibility of their energy usage within different areas of the school. Our brief was to ensure that the system put forward provided two things: 1. Provide the school with detailed consumption data for monitoring energy usage and costs; and 2. Incorporate a simple, engaging dashboard which could be used as a teaching tool to help the primary pupils learn about energy use and drive awareness of how to save energy.

The Cura Energy Approach

A site survey was conducted by Cura’s Energy Engineers to understand the practicalities of retrofitting an energy monitoring solution. After reviewing the survey details the Cura Team selected a modular energy monitoring system to monitor: individual classrooms, the school kitchen, and other areas of the building. The energy submeters would connect to a data logger with an in-built modem and SIM, which would allow the school 24/7 online access and visibility of their energy meter data via the bespoke dashboard. The installation was undertaken during the school holidays, minimising disruption.

The STEM Dashboard has been specifically designed with pupils in mind which consists of simplified energy data with fun graphics and likeable characters.

The Result

The school was provided with a login and access to the behind the scenes version which drove the system and data displayed. This is classed as the raw energy consumption data which could then be used for budgeting and to identify areas of potential energy savings. Pupils could also access the dashboard using a web link and see in real time the impact of simple energy-savings measures like switching off lights. Cura also went one step further and visited the school to talk about the importance of energy-saving, providing ‘energy-saving champion’ T-shirts and badges for pupils from each class, empowering them with the responsibility of ensuring energy efficiency.
