Gareth Holvey - National Apprenticeship Week 2024

National Apprenticeship Week takes place every year to raise awareness about the benefits apprenticeships can have in kickstarting a long and fruitful career. This year, we're celebrating our very own Junior Estimator, Gareth Holvey, who is completing a Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) Level 4 NVQ Apprenticeship as a Building Controls Engineer.

Gareth joined Cura late in 2023 as a Junior Estimator. Alongside his work, he has also been completing a Level 4 Apprenticeship as a Building Controls Engineer.

Speaking about his apprenticeship, Gareth said:

*"I haven't always worked in this industry; I was actually working as a golf pro/coach well into my late twenties. However, I decided I needed a change, and I felt now was a good time to enter the BMS/EMS industry.

With the UK committed to an economic plan for sustainability and having set the goal of decarbonising all sectors of the UK economy by 2050, I felt as if this industry was only going to grow and saw the potential to work in something both rewarding and financially beneficial.

So I took a gamble and joined this industry back in 2021.

I was in my early thirties and really nervous about taking such a big decision at that point in my life - but honestly, it was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made.

The apprenticeship has given me a wealth of knowledge and skills I need in the BMS industry, and I'm really enjoying the challenge and progressing quickly.

I first worked with a manufacturing company for the first two years of my apprenticeship, then I joined Cura in late 2023.

Cura Energy has been great to me - ensuring I have all the support I need and that I have time to complete my studies.

I couldn't recommend the apprenticeship enough to others, and I would tell anyone who wants to try a career change but worried they might be a little too late to do so - to ignore the worry and go for it. It's really working out for me."*

The apprenticeship Gareth is doing is a Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) Level 4 NVQ Apprenticeship as a Building Controls Engineer, which is being delivered by Group Horizon - links to both of their websites can be found below.
